GREY: IDENTIFICATION WITH THE OTHER
Horror is often preoccupied with the fear of the Other. Those who have been othered by society can find comfort and identification with the monsters/characters representing the Other.
PURPLE: OBSCURING BINARIES
Zombies occupy a space between binaries. Dead/alive, human/non-human. Man/woman.
GREEN: CONNECTION TO ZOMBIES
Fast zombies, slow zombies, the original Haitian zombi, rotting zombies, just-bitten zombies, metaphor-for-consumerism zombies, metaphor-for-xenophobia zombies. Zombies occupy a specific space in horror and so do we.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Zombiegender is a xenogender/neogender for trans/nonbinary & neurodivergent people who feel their gender is tied to the undead and the concept of zombies/being a zombie. It can be used in conjunction with undead-related gender labels such as unboy and ungirl. Specific neopronouns include ze/zed/zeds and ze/zom/zoms, but those are not necessary to use in order to ID as zombiegender.
We first coined this in 2013 as tumblr user zombiegender (now mothmanfucks). Other people have probably coined it as well, a lot of people are putting words in front of "gender."
